The Great ContrOversy

The Great ContrOversy

Many moons ago, when I first adopted radio as a paying hobby, I was fazed by those invisible but ever present “Pronunciation Police” – or PP – unseen beings that would pounce on one for mispronouncing anything from Mozart to Mareeba.

Oh yes, I’ve been caught many a time.  Once I mentioned a WA resort as Monkey Meeah (as in Ms Farrow).  An irate Sandgroper corrected me and said it was Monkey Mya (As in Myer)

  1. These are closely followed by pedantic radio producers, or even worse, program directors on country stations. (well, those over 25).  Listeners to community radio, especially the classical music oriented stations, come a very close third

Heaven help the announcer who did not get the names of the local towns or composers correct.  Let me tell you:

Ring ring – well, on the phone in the radio studio it would blink, flash! flash!

Me: “Hi radio —-, I’m Al.

Caller:  “Yer a flamin Dubbo, yer prernounced Howick street wrong – mate, it’s  Howiick Street. Not  Hoik or Hoe- ick.

That mini scenario never happened to me.  What happened was this.  I once  scored midnight to dawn on a Sydney classical station and played some music from Andre Previn and pronounced it as such.  Sure enough:  Flash, flash.

   Me: “Good evening, Radio 2….”

Double Bay Diva:  “Darling, that was a beautiful piece of music, but darling, would you take some criticism, given in kindness, darling.  He is Onre Prevon (be very French here) not Ondray Prev in. Apart from that darling, I’m enjoying the music.”

I put the phone down and to my solitary self-emitted, “no way baby.  He’s Ondray Prev (as in Nev) and he’s having it off with the lovely Mia Farrow.”

Anyway, I rang the on-duty PP officer at Aunty and put it to her. ” Definitely Ondray Previn,” she assured me.  “Whew!”

Having had this pedanticism drummed into me from year dot – I cringe when I hear mispronounced words or three different pronunciations of the one word.

Lemme tell ya. It makes you  very aware. Imagine my surprise when motor racing legend, the late Piers Courage, had his name pronounced as Pierre  Coo Raj (trés Francaise).

Those in the know would recognise Mr Courage as  bring the scion of one of Britain’s  great brewers, Courage (as in bravery).  Piers (Peers) of course, a good, solid English name.

This same chap – a lad of 70 ( a long-time staff member, once, during a music program, pronounced the Beatles as: “An English onsomb – Bee Artle and the song:  She loves you, Yes, Yes, Yes.”  He, of the very old school, could not bring himself to say “yeah, yeah, yeah.”

There are a couple of words, which take many forms – Kilometre and controversy.

Take the word controversy.  My copy of  Abraham & Betty Lass’ Dictionary of Pronunciation says it’s: Contra-verse-ee.  That is the way it was drummed into my pink little ear.

One very well known female newsreader on a Sydney channel pronounced it three different ways in one news bulletin.  “contra-versy, contr-OH-versy and controv (as in of) ersy.  Not bad.

Last night (Monday) the drop-dead gorgeous channel 10 newsreader, uttered the word contrOVersy in her  promo  to the late news bulletin.

During the bulletin, out came the word again, this time as contra-versy.  Yay!  Did the PP operatives ring Channel 10 and corrected her.  I hope so.

The beauty of the written word it doesn’t  matter how it’s pronounced as long as it is speld rite.

Now for closures:   Is it Kilo  metre or  Kilom-etre?

Over to you.

What is the name of this song (VH1 Promo)?

Hi, I have been looking for the name of this song for some days. There are 4 types, one on the drums, bass, a singer and a guitarist. I think the guitar is white with red, and has some big sunglasses and playing a riff that is very simple, of 3 notes, as dingdingding dongdongdong dungdung dungdung dongdongdong dingdingding and so on … and I think the vocalist is saying "I fell in loooooove" or something, has yellow hair and an unusual hairstyle, is 80, remembers me of U2, a sort of, by the guitar riff. I hope you know the name of the song or the band because that song is very addictive. Thanks
